Clan MacAlpine Society: Jan/Feb 2001 - Clan MacAlpine History: W. & A. K. Johnston Ltd., revised by Lord Lyon King Of Arms

January/February 2001 - Clan MacAlpine History: W. & A. K. Johnston Ltd. - As Originally published And As Revised By The Lord Lyon King Of Arms

The following excerpts are from W. & A. K. Johnston Ltd.'s "The Scottish Tartans". The second version is from a later edition revised by Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, Lord Lyon King Of Arms (Scotland's Heraldic Authority.)

Comparison of the two versions and the changes made confirms and emphasizes the Lord Lyon's perspective on Clan MacAlpine. For example, the Coat of Arms shown in the original edition was granted by Ireland's Heraldic Authority to a person living in Ireland who proved his descent from a MacGregor family from Scotland that began using the McAlpine name as an alias (due to the proscription of the MacGregor name.) The depiction in the 1st and 4th quarters of the shield clearly resemble other MacGregor Coats of Arms granted in Scotland. These Arms were removed from later editions by Lord Lyon Innes because these are "Irish MacGregor Arms" rather than "Scottish MacAlpine Arms." The motto on the arms reads: "En Do Baite - Spare not".

The description reads:

The Clan MacAlpine is Celtic. It is claimed that this clan is a Royal one, and that it is the most ancient in the Highlands. Some records indicate that for twenty-five generations Kings of Scotland were of the MacAlpine lineage. The ancient crest was a boar’s head, the Gaelic motto being the same as the war cry given above. The Alpin alluded to in the motto was King Alpin, murdered by Brudus after the defeat of the Scots by the Picts near Dundee in 834. The traditional home of the MacAlpines was Dunstaffnage, near Oban, Argyllshire. Some historians assign an Alpinian origin to the MacGregors, MacKinnons, MacNabs, Grants, MacQuarries, and others, and group them together under the name Siol Ailpein. Doubt has been cast on the accuracy of this origin. The MacGregor clan seems to have been the principal one. This would seem vouched for in the MacGregor motto “Is Rioghail mo Dhream” (“My race is Royal”), though later writers question this.

The edition revised by Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, Lord Lyon King Of Arms follows.

No MacAlpine has recorded arms or pedigree. The "Clan Alpine" was to have been a confederacy consisting of Grants, MacGregors, and others to counterbalance the Clan Chattan, but they disagreed on various matters at the inaugural meeting, so the confederation never materialised.
